June 2016
The year is flying by and we are now looking forward to bringing you our June concert, Soprano and Strings on Saturday 25th June at 7.30pm in St. James' Church. As well as some familiar favourites such as Britten's Simple Symphony and Vivaldi's Double Violin Concerto in A minor (Mary Eade and Anna Cockroft are the soloists), we have some lovely new works on the programme.
Many of you may remember us playing some short works by Clive Jenkins, including Tarte au Citron and Fanfare & Fugue in Memoriam Frances Andrade. We will be playing two other works, White Bird and Majesty. White Bird was commissioned in 2001 by the Ten Tors Orchestra and is based on the Dartmoor legend of the white bird appearing when a member of the Oxenham family was about to die. The soprano soloist at the premiere was Suzanne Manuell and we are delighted that she will be joining us.
Majesty was commissioned for a concert at the V&A complementing an exhibition of royal photographs by Cecil Beaton. It was later played as the Queen entered the Waterloo Chamber in Windsor Castle leading in other members of the royal family and Knights of the Garter. As we celebrate Her Majesty's 90th birthday, it is a most fitting work to perform.
Suzanne will also be singing three songs by Henry Purcell and Thomas Arne which Clive Jenkins has arranged and the orchestra will also be performing Telemann's Concerto for Three Violins, with Mary, Anna and Rowan Patterson taking the solo parts.
